In a symbolic move blending history and identity, Ghana has announced plans to rename its main international gateway back to Accra International Airport.
The Ghanaian government has decided to revert the name of Kotoka International Airport in Accra to its original and globally recognised name — Accra International Airport.
According to a statement from the Transport Ministry, the change will involve updating airport signage, official documents, aviation publications, statutory instruments, and digital platforms to reflect the restored name.
Officials said the decision was taken to align the airport with its original identity, noting that “Accra International Airport (ACC)” has remained its official designation in the records of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
The airport was renamed Kotoka International Airport in 1969 in honour of Lieutenant General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, a senior military officer who was killed during a failed coup attempt in 1967. The incident occurred at a location that now forms part of the airport’s forecourt.
The renaming marks a significant historical reset, as Ghana balances national heritage with international recognition of its aviation hub.
