Panic briefly gripped Murtala Muhammed International Airport after a fire broke out in a sensitive control area—but emergency responders acted fast to prevent disaster.
A fire outbreak at Terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, was quickly brought under control by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, with no injuries recorded.
The fire, reported at about 3:52 p.m., started in the IT Server Room on the third floor of the E-Wing departure lounge and also affected the nearby Radio Communication Room.
Fire crews from Isolo, Ikeja, Bolade and Alausa stations arrived within minutes and worked with other emergency agencies to contain the blaze before it could spread to other parts of the airport.
Twelve personnel in the Control Tower were safely evacuated, and no one was trapped or hurt during the incident.
Fire Service boss, Mrs Margaret Adeseye, credited the swift response and coordinated efforts of multiple agencies for protecting lives and critical airport infrastructure.
Authorities say the situation is fully under control, while investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.
