Nigeria is stepping up efforts to protect its borders, modernise defence strategies, and improve veterans’ welfare as part of a broader plan to tackle evolving security challenges.
The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening border security and reviewing key defence policies to better equip the nation against emerging threats.
Minister of Defence, retired Gen. Christopher Musa, said Nigeria’s security landscape is becoming more complex, making it necessary to update critical documents like the National Defence Policy and its implementation guidelines to reflect present-day realities.
He stressed that effective border management remains a cornerstone of national security, noting that authorities must closely monitor who enters and exits the country, as well as goods crossing the borders. According to him, stronger surveillance and improved coordination among security agencies will help curb transnational crimes and other security risks.
The minister also highlighted plans to improve the welfare of military veterans, including better healthcare, benefits, and support systems, describing it as a responsibility owed to those who served the nation.
Musa added that the Defence Ministry would work with relevant stakeholders to carry out a comprehensive review of security frameworks to ensure Nigeria’s Armed Forces remain prepared and responsive.
Meanwhile, the Alumni Association of the National Defence College pledged its support through research, advisory services, and strategic policy contributions aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture.
