DUST HAZE, STORMS TO SWEEP NIGERIA AS NiMET ISSUES 3-DAY WEATHER ALERT

Brace for hazy skies in the North and possible thunderstorms in the South as Nigeria faces three days of mixed weather conditions.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast widespread dust haze and cloudy conditions across the country from Monday through Wednesday, with reduced visibility expected in several northern states.

According to NiMet, northern Nigeria will experience slight to moderate dust haze at the start of the week, especially in Borno and Yobe, where visibility could drop to between 2km and 5km. Conditions are expected to worsen by Wednesday, with thick dust haze predicted across the entire northern and north-central regions.

The North-Central zone will also face persistent dust haze throughout the forecast period, raising concerns for residents sensitive to poor air quality.

In contrast, southern states will see mostly cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine, alongside chances of thunderstorms and light rains. States likely to be affected include Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Edo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, Cross River and Akwa Ibom, with some areas experiencing morning thunderstorms followed by rainfall later in the day.

NiMet warned that suspended dust particles could pose health risks, particularly for people with asthma and other respiratory conditions, urging residents to take precautions.

Motorists were advised to drive carefully during rainy conditions, while airline operators were encouraged to obtain airport-specific weather reports for safe flight planning.

The agency also urged Nigerians to stay updated through its official weather channels as conditions evolve.
