Some voters in Abaji couldn’t cast their ballots after BVAS machines failed to recognize them in Saturday’s area council polls.
In Abaji Area Council, several voters at Naharati Sabo Primary School were unable to vote after the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) rejected their permanent voter cards. Many, like 51-year-old Usman Nuhu, tried multiple times but were still denied.
“I left and came back three times, but the machine wouldn’t accept me,” Nuhu said. Another voter, Haruna Bala, joked that his new beard might be the problem. Others, like Mrs Adamu Amina, expressed disbelief, noting their cards had worked in previous elections.
Assistant Presiding Officer Muhammed Awal explained that age and physical changes could affect BVAS recognition but assured that all affected voters were captured and that complaints would be lodged for updates or new voter cards.
