Shared security threats, economic strength, and deep historical ties are driving Türkiye’s growing interest in Nigeria, its envoy reveals.
Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mehmet Poroy, says Türkiye views Nigeria as a crucial partner because both nations face similar terrorism threats and must work together to defeat them.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja, Poroy said Türkiye has gained years of experience fighting terrorist groups and is ready to share its expertise, military capabilities, and resources with Nigeria.
He stressed that Nigeria’s victory against groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP would not only secure the country but also stabilise West Africa and the wider African region.
According to him, Türkiye is already strengthening defence cooperation with Nigeria through military support, equipment supply, and joint local production of defence systems.
Beyond security, Poroy said Nigeria’s position as West Africa’s largest economy and its population of over 230 million make it an indispensable strategic and economic partner.
He added that the relationship between both nations dates back centuries—from Ottoman Empire ties with the Kanem-Bornu Empire to Türkiye opening an embassy in Nigeria immediately after independence in 1960.
Poroy reaffirmed that Türkiye remains committed to deepening defence, economic, and diplomatic cooperation with Nigeria.
