About 100 American military specialists have landed in Bauchi—not for combat, but to help strengthen Nigeria’s fight against terrorism.
The Defence Headquarters says the United States has deployed about 100 military personnel to Nigeria to train and support the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) in tackling security threats.
According to defence spokesman Maj.-Gen. Samaila Uba, the U.S. team and their equipment arrived at Bauchi Airfield under a bilateral defence agreement requested by Nigeria. He clarified that the Americans are serving strictly as advisers and trainers—not combat troops.
The partnership will focus on specialised training, technical support and intelligence-sharing to improve Nigeria’s operational strength against terrorists and better protect vulnerable communities.
Uba said all activities will remain under Nigeria’s control, with joint training and intelligence operations expected to enhance troop effectiveness in ongoing counterterrorism efforts.
He reaffirmed the military’s commitment to defeating extremist groups and assured Nigerians of transparency throughout the collaboration.
