TINUBU’S TURKEY TRIP OPENS NEW ERA OF SECURITY, TRADE DEALS

Nigeria and Türkiye are stepping up their partnership—with fresh defence, trade and education agreements signalling stronger ties ahead.

Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mehmet Poroy, says President Bola Tinubu’s recent state visit to Ankara marked a major turning point in relations between both countries.

Speaking in Abuja, Poroy told the News Agency of Nigeria that the January visit ushered in a new phase of cooperation, with nine agreements signed across security, trade, education, media, halal accreditation and diaspora matters.

He noted the visit was especially significant as it was Tinubu’s first trip to Türkiye and Nigeria’s first presidential bilateral visit there in nine years, following Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visit to Nigeria in 2021.

Security and counter-terrorism topped discussions, with Türkiye pledging stronger military collaboration, including possible joint defence production and supply of critical equipment to support Nigeria’s fight against terrorism.

On the economic front, both nations reaffirmed their $5 billion trade target and launched a Joint Economic and Trade Committee to remove barriers and boost investments.

Education also featured prominently, with new agreements and expanded opportunities for Nigerian students and diplomats, strengthening long-term diplomatic and cultural ties.

Poroy described the agreements as strategic investments that will deepen cooperation and strengthen the bond between both nations.
