Nigeria’s electoral landscape shifts as President Tinubu approves the 2026 amendment, paving the way for real-time election result transmission and modernized voting rules.
Abuja, Feb. 18, 2026 – President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday signed the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026 into law at the State House, Abuja, in a ceremony attended by National Assembly principal officers.
The amendment, passed by both chambers on Tuesday, updates key provisions of the 2022 Electoral Act. A major highlight is Section 60(3), which allows for the electronic transmission of election results in real time—a move aimed at increasing transparency and reducing post-election disputes. The harmonised bill reflects extensive debate over modernising Nigeria’s electoral process, balancing technology with existing voting procedures.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio confirmed the signing, emphasizing that the enactment marked the final legislative step after rigorous deliberations in both the Senate and House of Representatives. Analysts say the law could streamline election administration, improve public confidence, and strengthen accountability in upcoming polls.
The signing is seen as a key milestone for Nigeria’s democracy, particularly as the nation prepares for the 2026 general elections amid calls for credible, free, and fair elections.
