MAGISTRATES CRY OUT OVER POOR WELFARE, INSECURITY IN SOUTH-SOUTH

Judicial stakeholders warn that neglecting magistrates could weaken justice delivery and fuel corruption.

Stakeholders across South-South Nigeria have urged state governments to urgently provide official vehicles, housing, and improved welfare for magistrates to boost their safety, morale, and effectiveness.

Legal practitioners say many magistrates still rely on public transport or motorcycles to work, exposing them to security risks and pressure from dissatisfied litigants. They warned that poor welfare, dilapidated courtrooms, and lack of healthcare support could undermine justice delivery and even encourage corruption.

In Cross River, magistrates lamented years without official vehicles, promotions, or medical support, with some reportedly dying from untreated health challenges. Similar concerns were raised in Rivers, where the NBA called for better housing, vehicle replacement, and improved court infrastructure.

Stakeholders stressed that magistrates are often the first point of justice for ordinary citizens and must be properly equipped and protected. While some state governments say salaries and benefits are being paid, calls are growing for urgent reforms to preserve judicial dignity and strengthen the rule of law.
