REVIEW MINIMUM WAGE TO MATCH REALITY, DON TELLS FG

“Let my wage take me home” — expert says current pay no longer reflects cost of living.

An Industrial Relations expert at the University of Ilorin, Prof. Ismaila Kadiri, has urged the Federal Government to review the minimum wage upward to reflect today’s rising cost of living.

Delivering the university’s 296th Inaugural Lecture titled “Let My Wage Take Me Home: Issues and Controversies” in Ilorin, Kadiri said workers deserve wages that can comfortably cover basic necessities.

He explained that any meaningful wage increase must come through joint negotiations involving key players in the industrial relations system — government, employers and labour unions.

According to him, industrial relations goes beyond salary talks. It covers recruitment, promotion, motivation, discipline, retirement, and overall workplace harmony.

Kadiri also called for stronger social safety nets — including healthcare, housing support and food security programmes — to cushion economic hardship, adding that existing government initiatives should be reinvigorated to meet current global realities.
