LPPC CRACKS DOWN ON ‘BLUE SILK’ TITLE, SAYS ONLY SAN IS RECOGNISED

Committee warns lawyers: there’s no shortcut to the prestigious Silk rank.

The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has cautioned lawyers against using the title “Blue Silk,” declaring it has no legal backing and is not recognised under Nigerian law.

In a statement signed by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, the committee said the only officially recognised “Silk” rank remains the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) — the highest professional distinction for lawyers in the country.

According to the LPPC, the introduction or conferment of “Blue Silk” does not emanate from the committee or any authority recognised under the Legal Practitioners Act.

The body warned that lawyers who create, adopt or parade the unofficial title risk breaching the Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners 2023, stressing its resolve to protect the integrity and exclusivity of the SAN rank.

It also advised members of the legal profession and the public to disregard the so-called designation.
