New initiative aims to keep Nigerian kids safe on the internet while learning.
Globacom has joined forces with the National Council for Women Societies to scale its “Safe SIM Programme,” a tech-driven initiative that protects children from harmful online content.
The programme uses a specially configured SIM card for phones and tablets that blocks inappropriate websites and gambling platforms, providing a secure digital environment for education. Only accessible through schools, religious organisations, and partner bodies, the SIM ensures children can safely explore the internet.
Head of Operations, David Ibrahim, said the initiative responds to growing parental concerns about children’s exposure to risky online spaces and includes the “TechHeroes” digital literacy training, teaching kids to use technology responsibly.
NCWS President, Princess Edna Azura, praised the partnership as timely, noting it safeguards children while promoting productive digital engagement.
Currently, around 100,000 Safe SIMs are deployed across Nigeria’s estimated 50 million children, highlighting the need for collaborations like this to expand reach.
