BROU LEADS NIGERIA’S CHARGE AT AFRICAN JUNIOR FENCING CHAMPS

Nigeria’s fencing prodigy takes on Africa’s best!

Eighteen-year-old Inkosi Brou, grandson of the late Prof. Dora Akunyili, will spearhead Nigeria’s four-man team at the 2026 African Junior Fencing Championships in Dakar, Senegal (Feb. 16–20). Brou, Nigeria’s first global fencing medallist, is ranked 13th in men’s sabre and won silver at the 2024 World Tournoi Satellite Cup.

Joining him are Mahathir Idongesit (men’s épée), Sara Idongesit (women’s épée), and Adebodunrin Thomas (women’s épée). The team will compete in individual and team events, with hopes of improving on last year’s bronze in Angola.

National coach Ibrahim Alogba highlighted the championships as key prep for the Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos this August, while federation president Adeyinka Samuel called for increased investment in young talents eyeing Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
