SENATE CALLS EMERGENCY SITTING AMID ELECTORAL ACT ROW

Lawmakers return Tuesday despite recess, as pressure mounts over election law amendments.

The Senate will reconvene for an emergency plenary on Tuesday, February 10, at noon, cutting short its recess that was meant to last until February 24.

The directive, issued in a notice dated February 8 and signed by Clerk of the Senate Emmanuel Odo, was given on the instruction of Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Senators have been asked to attend the sitting at the Senate Chamber, with the notice apologising for the inconvenience.

While no official reason was stated, the timing points to the growing national controversy over the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026, especially Section 60(3) on the electronic transmission of election results.

The Senate had earlier adjourned plenary to allow members participate in 2026 budget defence sessions, ahead of the planned passage of the ₦58.472 trillion Appropriation Bill on March 17.
