Can AI boost reporting without replacing human judgment?
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Kwara Council held a workshop in Ilorin on using Artificial Intelligence (AI) in news reporting, in partnership with E-SANAD Academy. Titled “Artificial Intelligence (AI): Is Journalism on Trial?”, the training focused on responsible AI integration while preserving accuracy and ethics.
Resource speaker Kehinde Kamaldeen urged journalists to use AI as a tool, not a replacement. “Fact-check content before publication to ensure credibility. AI can’t replace human judgment,” he said.
ESANAD CEO Ganiyu Yusuf highlighted AI’s benefits and risks, especially ahead of the 2027 elections. “AI can summarize and paraphrase, but hallucinations happen. Human oversight is essential,” he warned.
NUJ Kwara Chairman Ahmed AbdulLateef added that overreliance on AI could stifle creativity and critical thinking. He encouraged continuous learning and development, as well as investment in local AI technologies.
The workshop equipped reporters with practical guidance to balance AI efficiency with journalistic integrity.
