Protecting critical infrastructure is now non-negotiable.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Oyo State has issued a stern warning to contractors and road construction companies: don’t damage fibre-optic cables or other essential public infrastructure during excavation.
NSCDC Oyo’s PRO, Samuel Opebiyi, said rising incidents of damaged underground cables have disrupted internet services, banking, emergency communications, and government operations—posing risks to public safety and national security.
“All construction or digging must be preceded by verification of underground utilities. Contractors must liaise with telecom providers, NSCDC, and relevant authorities before starting work,” Opebiyi stressed.
Violators face arrest, investigation, and prosecution. NSCDC Commandant Augustine Padonu also urged the public and project stakeholders to report any suspicious or unlawful excavation activities.
