MOROCCO WINS SEAT ON AU PEACE AND SECURITY COUNCIL

Morocco has secured a fresh mandate at the African Union, winning a key seat on the continent’s top peace and security body.

Morocco has been elected to a two-year term on the African Union’s Peace and Security Council (AU-PSC) after clinching 34 votes—more than the required two-thirds majority—in a first-round ballot held in Addis Ababa.

The election took place during the 48th Ordinary Session of the AU Executive Council. Morocco’s foreign ministry described the victory as a reflection of the country’s “responsible and inclusive” contributions since rejoining the AU in 2017.

This will be Morocco’s third time on the council, having previously served from 2018 to 2020 and from 2022 to 2025. The AU-PSC is the Union’s standing decision-making organ tasked with conflict prevention, management, and resolution across Africa.

The session precedes the 39th AU Summit of Heads of State and Government scheduled for February 14–15, with Morocco’s delegation led by Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.
