Lagos youths are stepping up as first responders with a new grassroots safety network to tackle emergencies across the state.
The Lagos State Government has applauded the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) for launching the Lagos Youth Safety and Emergency Champions (LYSEC), a new initiative aimed at strengthening community-based emergency response.
Unveiled in Surulere during the Lagos Youth Talk Series 2.0, the initiative will complement existing safety agencies. NYCN Chairman, Mr. Ibrahim Adigun, said youths are often the first at the scene of incidents and, when properly trained and coordinated, can serve as a powerful early-warning and response network.
Commissioner for Special Duties, Mr. Olugbenga Oyerinde, described the programme as timely, noting that Lagos’ growing population requires stronger grassroots response systems. He said LYSEC aligns with Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ agenda and existing reforms, including the state’s Command and Control Centre and other emergency response structures.
Youth and Social Development Commissioner, Mr. Mobolaji Ogunlende, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to youth inclusion, while officials from FRSC, NSCDC and LASTMA pledged collaboration.
Champions were drawn from 57 councils across Lagos, with the framework outlining structured training, coordination, and partnership for safer communities.
