JUSUN SOUNDS ALARM OVER POOR WELFARE FOR MAGISTRATES

Union warns neglect puts judges at risk and weakens justice delivery.

The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Plateau Chapter, has called for urgent improvement in the welfare of magistrates and judiciary workers in the state.

Speaking in Jos, JUSUN Chairman Ayuba Tongs said magistrates have been largely sidelined compared to judges of superior courts who enjoy better facilities and government support. He described the situation as a serious oversight that needs fixing, not blame-shifting.

According to Tongs, many magistrates lack official accommodation and vehicles, forcing them to use public transport despite the security risks tied to their sensitive duties. He warned that such conditions could expose them to danger from disgruntled litigants.

He also cautioned that poor welfare could encourage corruption, noting that hardship undermines integrity within the justice system. Tongs urged the government to roll out comprehensive welfare packages—including housing, vehicles and allowances—and push for full judicial autonomy to strengthen justice delivery.
