UN WARNS CUBA AT RISK OF HUMANITARIAN “COLLAPSE” AS OIL DRIES UP

As fuel shortages bite and prices soar, the UN says Cuba could be pushed to the brink without urgent action.

The United Nations has warned that Cuba could face a humanitarian “collapse” if the island’s oil needs aren’t met, as widening restrictions and threats to block fuel supplies intensify its crisis.

UN Secretary‑General António Guterres, speaking through his spokesperson, said he was “extremely concerned” about the deteriorating situation and urged all parties to pursue dialogue and respect international law.

Fuel shortages have already triggered higher food prices, severe electricity outages and constraints on transportation and public services. Cuba has long depended on imports, and recent threats of tariffs on countries supplying oil have cut vital lifelines, prompting rationing plans and concern about deeper social impacts.

UN officials say the crisis adds to an already fragile humanitarian picture, underscoring the need for cooperation, increased aid and sustainable solutions to help Cuban families weather the shock.
