OYO GOVT SEIZES CHEMICALLY RIPENED FRUITS, WARNS PUBLIC

Health alert as authorities intercept toxic mangoes in Oyo market

The Oyo State Ministry of Health has seized 12 baskets of chemically ripened mangoes at a local market in Oyo town, warning residents about the hidden dangers of artificially treated fruits.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, said the fruits were prepared for sale to unsuspecting buyers and could pose long-term health risks, including chemical buildup and cancer. She urged consumers to watch out for unevenly colored fruits, unnaturally green vegetables, and chemically preserved meats.

The seizure followed a tip-off from a concerned citizen, with ministry officials acting swiftly to prevent public consumption. Dr. Ajetunmobi also encouraged home gardening as a safe alternative.

Dr. Afusat Akande, Director of Food, Water and Laboratory Services, noted ongoing engagement with vendors and market associations, stressing that offenders would face sanctions under state regulations.
