NSE PUSHES FOR ELECTRONIC TRANSMISSION OF 2027 ELECTION RESULTS

Engineers say real-time digital results can boost transparency, cut disputes

The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has backed real-time electronic transmission of election results ahead of the 2027 polls, despite the Senate rejecting the proposal.

NSE President Ali Rabiu said electronic transmission is faster, more secure, and less prone to manipulation than manual processes, citing successful models in Estonia and India.

“Digital uploads from polling units can cut result declaration from days to hours, improve accuracy, and provide auditable records using technologies like blockchain and end-to-end encryption,” Rabiu said.

He criticized the Senate for making the decision without consulting technical experts, noting that challenges like rural network coverage and infrastructure gaps can be mitigated with offline caching, satellite links, and scalable cloud systems.

Rabiu stressed that real-time electronic results would reduce disputes, cut costs, and enhance public confidence in Nigeria’s elections.
