“Silence fuels harm; action can save a generation”
Dr. Nonye Soludo, wife of the Anambra Governor and founder of the Healthy Living Initiative, has condemned Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) as a violation of girls’ and women’s rights, calling it a harmful practice with lifelong physical and psychological consequences.
Speaking on the International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM, she highlighted that 4 million girls globally undergo FGM each year, with over 230 million women already living with its effects. Soludo stressed that education, advocacy, and community action are key to ending the practice, warning that continued silence threatens the future of young girls.
“FGM has no cultural or moral justification. We must act now to protect our daughters and ensure a safer, healthier future,” she said.
