Justice delivers relief to overcrowded prison as jail review exercise concludes
The Chief Judge of Ekiti State, Justice Lekan Ogunmoye, has ordered the release of 57 awaiting trial inmates at the Ado-Ekiti Correctional Centre following a comprehensive jail delivery exercise.
During the review, 518 cases—covering 511 men and 7 women—were assessed. Six inmates were granted bail, nine discharged for having no case to answer, and 42 released unconditionally due to minor offences or ill health.
Justice Ogunmoye praised stakeholders, including the police legal unit, public prosecutors, lawyers, and court staff, as well as the prison management for maintaining hygiene and inmate welfare. He urged the released inmates to remain law-abiding.
Ekiti’s Comptroller of Corrections, Oluremi Okuseinde, highlighted the facility’s overcrowding—922 inmates in a space designed for 324—and called for additional infrastructure to aid rehabilitation and proper inmate management.
