Relief and hope as abducted church members regain freedom, but the rescue mission isn’t over yet.
Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has confirmed the release of 82 worshippers kidnapped during the January 18 attack on Kurmin Wali village in Kajuru LGA — calling it a major boost to ongoing security operations in the state.
The victims were among about 177 people abducted when gunmen stormed three churches during Sunday service, forcing worshippers into nearby forests. Eleven people reportedly escaped during the chaos.
Governor Sani shared the update on Thursday while visiting the freed worshippers at a state-run care facility in Kaduna, where they’re receiving medical and psychosocial support. While welcoming their release, he stressed that the job isn’t finished.
“This is a step forward, but we won’t rest until every abducted person is reunited with their family,” the governor said.
He praised the military and security agencies for sustained operations, especially in Kajuru’s forest areas and neighbouring LGAs, pointing to improved intelligence and stronger community cooperation.
The governor also urged residents to keep supporting security forces with useful information, noting that community collaboration is key to restoring peace.
Security sources say operations are still underway to rescue the remaining captives and dismantle criminal hideouts, as the military maintains pressure on armed groups targeting rural communities and places of worship.
