OHANAEZE URGES FG TO FUND SOUTH-EAST DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION

Mbata calls for action to heal wounds, boost growth, and empower youths in Igboland.

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has urged the Federal Government to prioritise funding for the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) to drive meaningful development in the region.

President-General John Mbata made the appeal on Wednesday at the South East Vision 2050 (SEV2050) Stakeholders Forum in Enugu, saying proper funding would accelerate growth, rebuild trust, and heal old grievances in Igboland.

“Development, when sincerely pursued, is one of the strongest tools for peace and national unity,” Mbata stressed, highlighting the region’s contribution to Nigeria through enterprise, innovation, and resilience. He warned that feelings of exclusion and neglect, if unaddressed, could weaken national cohesion.

Mbata described the commission not just as a statutory body but as a powerful instrument for reconciliation, calling on stakeholders to support it with ideas, oversight, and partnerships to ensure interventions reach communities, empower youth, and restore faith in public institutions.

He concluded: “Let Vision 2050 mark a turning point – where South-East youths see opportunity, not frustration, and where unity is strengthened through equity and shared prosperity.”
