All eyes on grassroots spending as lawmakers move to tighten accountability.
The Lagos State House of Assembly has kicked off a comprehensive audit of accounts for all 20 LGAs and 37 LCDAs, signalling a tougher stance on transparency and prudent use of public funds at the local level.
Opening the exercise in Ikeja, Prince Nureni Akinsanya, Chairman of the House Committee on Public Accounts (Local), said the audit is aimed at checking records, spotting lapses, and correcting errors where necessary. He stressed that the goal is not witch-hunting but ensuring councils follow due process and manage public resources responsibly.
The audit, backed by the Local Government Administration Law 2024, will also review the 2023 Auditor-General’s report for local governments. Council chairmen, vice chairmen, treasurers, managers and other top officials are expected to appear before the committee.
Akinsanya assured that the process would be fair, objective, and thorough, with findings and recommendations to be presented to the House for further action.
The first councils audited include Epe LGA, Ojo LGA, Ikoyi-Obalende LCDA, Ifelodun LCDA and Agboyi-Ketu LCDA.
