Abuja turns 50 in style as FCTA plans a big celebration alongside President Tinubu’s third year in office.
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) is set to roll out a golden jubilee celebration for Abuja at 50, timed to coincide with President Bola Tinubu’s third anniversary in office, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has announced.
Speaking at a staff meeting in Abuja, Wike said a special committee will soon be inaugurated to plan both milestones, adding that a golden jubilee compendium highlighting Abuja’s journey will be unveiled during the celebrations in about three months.
Wike credited the rapid transformation of the FCT in the last two and a half years to Tinubu’s support, especially the decision to remove the FCT from the Treasury Single Account (TSA)—a move he said unlocked access to funding and fast-tracked major infrastructure projects.
“People now see massive development because the bottleneck was removed. Without that decision, we’d still be stuck explaining why nothing was happening,” Wike said, urging appreciation for what he described as a critical foundation laid by the President.
Beyond roads and buildings, the minister said FCT workers have also enjoyed unprecedented career progression, noting that Tinubu made it possible for staff to rise to positions such as Permanent Secretary and Head of Service.
Earlier, FCDA Acting Executive Secretary, Richard Dauda, described the scale of infrastructure delivery under Wike as unmatched in the FCT’s 50-year history. He said several inherited projects have been completed, with many others nearing completion.
Dauda revealed that nine projects were inaugurated in 2024, 17 in 2025, and expressed confidence that by Tinubu’s third anniversary, the number of projects inaugurated under Wike could hit 50 since August 2023.
