Another major blow to drug traffickers as Customs intercepts a container packed with cannabis — and even a pistol — at Tincan Island Port.
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) at Tincan Island Command has handed over a massive haul of 2,366 packs of cannabis indica worth more than ₦4.7 billion to the NDLEA, following a major interception at the Lagos port.
Customs said the drugs were hidden inside a 40-foot container carrying 55 jumbo bags of cannabis, uncovered during routine enforcement backed by intelligence-led profiling. The container was jointly examined on January 28 by Customs, NDLEA and DSS operatives.
According to the Area Controller, Comptroller Frank Onyeka, smugglers went as far as using three used vehicles — a Hyundai Santa Fe, Toyota Sienna and Toyota Matrix — to conceal the drugs. Officers also discovered a Colt MK IV .45 calibre pistol with an empty magazine inside the container, and one suspect has been arrested.
Onyeka said the operation reflects Customs’ commitment to global best practices in border security, warning that the service will not tolerate drug smuggling or transnational crimes that threaten public health and national security.
Receiving the consignment, NDLEA Commander Solomon Omotoso praised the strong inter-agency collaboration and assured that investigations and prosecution would be pursued to the fullest under the law.
