Breaking the silence, securing justice
The Lagos State Government has called for thorough and coordinated investigations to ensure Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) perpetrators are successfully prosecuted.
Dr. Babajide Martins, Director of Public Prosecutions, stressed that gaps in investigations and witness intimidation often weaken SGBV cases. He urged strict adherence to legal procedures, proper documentation, and collaboration among stakeholders to improve justice delivery for survivors.
Justice Abiola Soladoye of Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court added that reliance on medical reports alone is no longer necessary; forensic evidence and other indicators can strengthen cases.
Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), said the conference assessed past interventions and identified gaps to improve response systems, ensuring survivors are treated with dignity while perpetrators face accountability.
Police and health officials highlighted challenges like witness reluctance, family withdrawal, and stigma, calling for enhanced public awareness and discrete investigation practices to support victims and prevent re-traumatization.
