KANO’S AUDU BAKO ZOO SET FOR MAJOR REVAMP

From declining visits to a must-see attraction—Kano plans to turn its historic zoo into a model wildlife park.

The Audu Bako Zoological Garden in Kano is set for a comprehensive, multi-phase transformation as the state moves to reposition it as a modern wildlife park and tourism hub.

The newly appointed Managing Director of the Kano State Zoological Garden and Wildlife Management Agency (KAZOWMA), Malam Musayyib Kawu, said the revamp—backed by Governor Abba Yusuf—aims to boost domestic tourism, revenue and job creation.

Plans include a cleaner environment, better visitor facilities, new animal species, and improved staff welfare to raise service standards and attract more visitors.

Kawu said the agency will carry out a detailed assessment of the zoo’s needs and submit recommendations to the state government to restore its status as a top tourist destination.

Established in 1971/72 on Zoo Road, Kano, the 46-hectare Audu Bako Zoo hosts over 70 animal species, including lions, giraffes and elephants, and plays a key role in conservation, education and recreation—despite recent challenges like funding gaps and ageing facilities.

The goal: bring the zoo back to life and put Kano on the wildlife tourism map.
