A major security sweep in January has landed armed robbery, terrorism and kidnapping suspects in police custody.
The Imo State Police Command says it has recorded a major breakthrough after detaining 25 suspects linked to armed robbery, kidnapping, terrorism, cultism and drug peddling across the state.
Police spokesperson DSP Henry Okoye said the arrests followed intensified security operations ordered by Commissioner of Police AIG Aboki Danjuma, and carried out by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit and other tactical teams.
Recovered items include assault rifles, live ammunition, vehicles, motorcycles, charms, stolen roofing sheets—and a massive 35 bags (about 1,200kg) of suspected marijuana.
Among those arrested are suspected members of the proscribed IPOB and its armed wing, ESN, allegedly linked to high-profile crimes, including the 2021 murder of two traditional rulers in Njaba LGA, as well as cases of kidnapping and armed robbery.
Police also intercepted a bus transporting drugs meant for criminal networks and arrested a wanted ESN suspect, whose confession led to the dismantling of an ESN camp and further recovery of weapons.
All suspects and exhibits are currently in custody, with investigations ongoing. The police urged residents to stay alert and share timely information to support crime-fighting efforts.
Bottom line: Imo police say the heat on criminal networks is staying on.
