Ending HIV discrimination starts with awareness
The Federal Government, through the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), has kicked off the Zero Stigma Campaign in Ikeja, Lagos, targeting discrimination against people living with HIV (PLWHIV). Partners include GEDERITE Nigeria, LSACA, and ISHRAI.
Dr. Folakemi Animashaun, LSACA CEO, stressed that stigma remains a major barrier to HIV testing, treatment, and care. Dr. Temitope Ilori, NACA DG (represented by Raheem Mohammed), called on all stakeholders to take collective responsibility in eliminating discrimination.
Day one featured a road walk and awareness rally from Ikeja Secretariat to Ipodo Market, plus a sensitisation session at Oregun Senior High School for 250 students on HIV facts, prevention, and respect for PLWHIV.
The campaign was officially flagged off by Ikeja LGA Chairman, Mr. Akeem Daudu, with support from NEPWHAN, ASHWAN, and community leaders, affirming commitment to inclusive, stigma-free communities.
Advocacy visits last week helped secure community buy-in from transport unions, market leaders, traditional rulers, religious groups, and civil society organizations.
The campaign will continue with community engagement, education, and strengthened access to HIV prevention and testing services.
