He was heading for a flight out of Lagos when police closed in.
Airport Police operatives in Lagos have arrested a 24-year-old man over an alleged ₦48.5 million romance scam, just as he was about to board a flight to Asaba.
According to police spokesperson ASP Mohammed Adeola, the suspect was picked up by the Anti-Fraud Unit after actionable intelligence linked him to an online love scam syndicate operating since 2023.
Investigators say the suspect posed online as “Travis Kevin,” a supposed white American medical doctor, using fake profiles on Facebook and Instagram to lure victims. He allegedly ran a fake banking website showing imaginary account balances to gain trust.
Victims were reportedly persuaded to send money—often via cryptocurrency—under claims that he needed funds for food and medical supplies after fake “injuries on duty,” with promises of quick repayment.
The Commissioner of Police, Mrs Olufunke Ogunbode, has ordered a full investigation and directed officers to track down other members of the syndicate, stressing zero tolerance for crime within airport corridors.
Police say the suspect will be handed over to Interpol for further investigation and prosecution.
