Chamber calls for balanced approach as market shutdown hits livelihoods.
The Onitsha Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (ONICCIMA) has appealed to Anambra Governor Chukwuma Soludo to use dialogue rather than prolonged closures in managing the Onitsha Main Market shutdown.
In a statement, ONICCIMA President Chinedu Nwonu noted the economic toll of sit-at-home orders, with Anambra losing an estimated ₦8 billion weekly, part of a broader ₦19.6 billion loss across the South-East. He warned that extended closures risk supply chain disruption, higher prices, inflation, and investor flight.
While supporting measures to restore law and order, Nwonu urged the government to balance enforcement with economic sensitivity, protect businesses, and ensure the market returns to safe, regular operations.
