Courtroom drama in Abuja as Legal Aid counsel bows out, citing attempts to “dictate” legal strategy.
A lawyer from the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria (LACON), Demdoo Asan, has withdrawn from representing Nnamdi Kanu at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The reason? He told the court that Kanu was insisting on controlling how the case should be argued.
Justice James Omotosho approved the withdrawal, stressing that lawyers must be allowed to work independently and in line with professional ethics. The judge also struck out Kanu’s ex-parte motion seeking a transfer from Sokoto Correctional Facility, ruling it incompetent since it was not converted to a motion on notice as earlier directed.
Asan explained that efforts to properly file the required motion failed, partly due to lack of cooperation and what he described as Kanu’s attempt to “dictate the tone” of the case from detention.
With no valid application before the court, Justice Omotosho closed the matter for now, noting that Kanu is free to seek legal representation elsewhere if dissatisfied.
