Think ginger can’t thrive in Bauchi? New trials say otherwise—and the profits are hard to ignore.
An agronomist, Dr Rashida Bala, is urging farmers in Bauchi State to add ginger to their fields, saying the crop could be a game-changer for incomes and livelihoods.
According to her, recent studies and hands-on trials show Bauchi’s soil and climate are well-suited for ginger, with harvests delivering “impressive” yields. The long-held belief that ginger only thrives in certain states, she said, has now been busted.
“Among all the crops we tested, ginger stood out as one of the most profitable,” Bala noted, adding that it’s relatively easy to manage and enjoys strong demand both locally and internationally.
She advised farmers to diversify beyond traditional crops, while warning about pests and diseases that can affect ginger if poorly managed. The fix? Healthy seed rhizomes, proper crop rotation and good field practices.
Bala also had a message for young people: agriculture isn’t just survival—it’s big business and a clear path to wealth creation.
