The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has rescued 68 victims—51 females and 17 males—and apprehended 62 suspected human traffickers in Akwa Ibom in 2025.
Uyo Zonal Commander, Mr. Ubong Ekwere, told NAN that five victims—including two males, one female, and two babies—remain in NAPTIP shelters, while the others have been reunited with their families.
The command handled 58 trafficking cases last year, receiving some from the police, DSS, and Immigration Service, while managing 47 directly. Two convictions have been secured, with 22 cases still in court.
Ekwere warned of a new trend involving baby trafficking and urged parents, communities, and local authorities to stay vigilant. He also called for state and NGO support, noting the agency lacks operational vehicles to cover all 31 local governments.
“Akwa Ibom has been endemic for human trafficking, but with collaboration, we can end it. Traffickers beware—the law will catch up with you,” he said.
NAPTIP plans ongoing awareness campaigns in schools, mosques, churches, and rural areas to educate the public on trafficking dangers.
