Tiny bottles, huge risk: Sachet alcohol now off the shelves!
Lagos, Jan. 21, 2026 – The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has officially begun enforcing the ban on alcohol sold in sachets and bottles under 200ml. The move targets the protection of children, adolescents, and young adults from easy access to high-strength drinks.
Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye said the enforcement follows a Senate directive and aims to curb the proliferation of cheap, concealable, high-alcohol content beverages. “NAFDAC is not against alcohol, but we cannot allow products with dangerously high alcohol levels to be easily accessible to youths,” she stressed.
The ban, first announced in November 2025, had been temporarily suspended for consultations but is now fully in effect. Adeyeye also recalled efforts since 2018 to reduce alcohol content in sachets, citing public health concerns.
