Church leaders say lives were at stake while officials argued facts. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged the police and other security agencies to act fast—and speak carefully—after the alleged abduction of worshippers in Kurmin Wali, Kajuru LGA, Kaduna State.
CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, said the initial public dismissal of the incident was troubling, warning that such statements fueled confusion, fear, and cast doubt on victims, families and eyewitnesses.
“Verifying incidents in remote areas is hard, but it shouldn’t look like indifference to victims,” Okoh said, stressing that comments from top security officials must be measured and empathetic to preserve public trust.
While acknowledging the police’s later confirmation of the abduction and the IGP’s swift deployment of assets, CAN demanded the immediate and unconditional release of all abducted worshippers and intensified rescue efforts.
The group pledged continued engagement with authorities to ensure accountability and lasting security, as police explained the early denial was due to conflicting reports before verification.
