A tense protest over the NYSC camp arrangement has forced a shutdown of Kwara Polytechnic.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has ordered the immediate closure of KwaraPoly to protect lives and property after students protested the use of the institution as a temporary NYSC orientation camp.
According to the Acting Registrar, AbdulHafis Amin, the school had granted students a three-week break to allow the camp run smoothly. But with students just back from the yuletide break, the decision sparked anger and tension.
Protests escalated at the main gate, prompting police intervention. However, tear gas reportedly fired into the campus and hostels injured several students and staff, including the Chief Security Officer.
Following the unrest, the state government stepped in, directing the full closure of the polytechnic while authorities work to calm tensions and resolve the issue.
School management has urged students and staff to remain calm as talks continue with relevant agencies.
