The initiative aims to fight preventable blindness and develop highly skilled eye-care professionals across the North-East. Doctors, nurses, optometrists, and biomedical engineers are already getting hands-on experience with the new devices to make the hospital a regional centre of excellence.

Prof. Abdull Mohammed Mahdi said, “This is not just about equipment; it’s about equipping our people to deliver top-notch eye care.” NEDC also plans to renovate the hospital and expand similar eye-care projects to other states, including a modern Eye Institute in Bauchi.

The ₦3 billion investment is expected to transform cataract and glaucoma management and strengthen healthcare access across the region.
