The Lagos State House of Assembly has thrown its weight behind the government’s ongoing demolition of illegal structures along shorelines and beneath high-tension cables .
While residents of Makoko and Oworonsoki recently protested the clearance, the Assembly, through Mr. Stephen Ogundipe, stressed that the move is vital for public safety, disaster prevention, and sustainable urban development.
Ogundipe warned that many shanties have become havens for miscreants, touts, kidnappers, and vandals, endangering lives and public property. He urged residents to cooperate with officials, comply with building regulations, and assured that support would be provided to those affected.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu emphasized the exercise is necessary to prevent future tragedies, citing structural, environmental, and safety risks posed by illegal buildings.
