A fresh controversy is brewing in Katsina as opposition voices slam a proposed move to release suspected bandits. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has outrightly rejected plans by the Dikko Radda-led government to free 70 suspected bandits, calling it dangerous and unfair to victims of insecurity.
Speaking in Katsina, ADC spokesperson Lawal Tukur-Batagarawa said a leaked “secret” letter from the Ministry of Justice shows legal steps are already underway to secure the suspects’ release. He warned that such a decision would weaken public trust, demoralise security operatives, and embolden criminals terrorising rural communities.
While the state government insists the move is part of an ongoing peace deal with “repentant” bandits, the ADC says freeing suspects while communities are still under attack is a betrayal of justice and those who have lost lives and livelihoods.
“This is totally unacceptable. You don’t reward crime when people are still bleeding,” Tukur-Batagarawa said, urging the government to rethink the plan.
The party also used the occasion to unveil its new Katsina State leadership and kick off membership mobilisation ahead of future political engagements.
