Tears flowed, hearts sank, but pride still stood tall. That’s how many football fans in Abuja are reacting to the Super Eagles’ AFCON 2025 journey — a campaign they describe as painful, yet remarkable.
Nigeria’s dream of reaching the final ended on Wednesday after a tense 0–0 draw with hosts Morocco, followed by a 4–2 defeat on penalties in the semifinals. The result left millions of Nigerians devastated, especially given the team’s strong showing throughout the tournament.
Despite the heartbreak, fans praised the Super Eagles for their discipline, resilience, and fighting spirit.
Sports administrator Tolulope Oguntimehin noted that the absence of midfield anchor Wilfred Ndidi was clearly felt.
“Ndidi’s ability to close spaces and support Onyeka gives the team balance. We really felt his absence,” he said, adding that the coaching crew must begin developing alternatives to key players to maintain tactical stability going forward.
Still, one familiar frustration refused to fade — Nigeria’s penalty shootout woes.
“Why can’t we ever win on penalties?” asked Nasir Abdullahi. “We start strong, but always falter close to the final.”
For some fans, the moment the match went to penalties, hope was already lost. Fiyinsoluwa Fadahunsimi admitted, “I turned off my TV and went to bed. I already knew what would happen.”
Others questioned officiating decisions, while a few reflected sadly on Nigeria’s long history of bad luck in penalty shootouts, wondering when — or if — the story will ever change.
Yet, amid the disappointment, optimism still shone through. Aliyu Modibbo praised the team for inspiring Nigerians at home and abroad.
“They gave us hope. Their resilience shows the future can still be bright,” he said.
Fans have now turned their focus to Saturday’s third-place playoff against Egypt, urging the Super Eagles to play without fear and finish the tournament on a high note.
One supporter summed it up with calm reflection: “That is how Allah destined it. Football is like life — one team must fall. The players and fans showed true patriotism.”
While the final dream slipped away, many agree that the unity, passion, and commitment displayed at AFCON 2025 have laid a strong foundation for future success.
Nigeria takes on Egypt on Saturday at 5 p.m. Nigerian time at Stade Mohammed V, while Morocco will battle Senegal in Sunday’s final at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
