EXTRA-TIME DRAMA: GUEYE FIRES SENEGAL TO SECOND AFCON TITLE

One moment of brilliance was all it took.

Senegal are champions of Africa once again after edging hosts Morocco 1–0 after extra time in a tense AFCON 2025 final in Rabat.

The breakthrough came just three minutes into extra time when Pape Gueye unleashed a stunning left-footed strike from the edge of the box, silencing the home crowd and sealing Senegal’s second AFCON crown.

Morocco had earlier come agonisingly close to winning it in regulation time, but Edouard Mendy produced a huge save to deny Brahim Díaz from the penalty spot after a late VAR decision.

Both teams traded chances in a tightly fought contest — Morocco hunting a first title in over 50 years, while Senegal looked to reclaim continental glory. The Teranga Lions started strongly, forcing Yassine Bounou into key saves, while Morocco grew into the game and pushed hard after the break.

When extra time arrived, Senegal struck. A clever pass from Sadio Mané set up Gueye, who made no mistake.

Despite late pressure from the Atlas Lions, Senegal held firm, with Mendy once again standing tall to see out a famous win.

Calm, clinical, and resilient — Senegal are African champions again.
