NEXT UN CHIEF: MEMBER STATES URGED TO ACT EARLY, NOMINATE WOMEN

The United Nations is already looking ahead to its next leader — and the call is for speed and inclusivity.

UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock has urged Member States to submit qualified candidates early for the next UN Secretary-General, while strongly encouraging the nomination of women to ensure a balanced and inclusive process.

Speaking during the resumed 80th UN General Assembly session, Baerbock said the selection is a top priority as current Secretary-General António Guterres leaves office in December. She noted that interactive dialogues with candidates will hold in April, allowing them to present their visions.

Baerbock stressed that the choice will shape how the world responds to conflict, climate change, and inequality, at a time when multilateralism is under pressure. She also reminded countries that the UN remains essential and called on them to defend the institution and meet their financial obligations.
