Even in defeat, Nigeria’s Super Eagles showed true grit
After a tense 4-2 penalty shootout loss to Morocco in the AFCON 2025 semi-final, Head Coach Eric Chelle praised his team for their mental strength and fighting spirit in Rabat.
“The match was never easy, but the players showed strong mentality and fought for every ball,” Chelle said, acknowledging the heartbreak but applauding his squad’s effort.
The clash, dubbed a “final before the final”, ended 0-0 after 120 minutes, with both sides disciplined and cautious. Chelle explained that Nigeria pressed high to contain Morocco’s attack but admitted his team fell short technically, lacking movement and power at key moments.
Despite the loss, Calvin Bassey and goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali stood out, with Nwabali making a brilliant one-handed save during the shootout. Unfortunately, missed penalties from Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi sealed Nigeria’s exit.
Chelle urged the team to stay focused, as Nigeria now aims for a podium finish against Egypt on Saturday in Casablanca.
“We worked hard throughout the tournament. This is football, and we must continue working,” he said.
