The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) deployed a high-powered technical team from Abuja to the Great Nigeria Insurance House fire on Lagos Island Wednesday, bolstering multi-agency response at the 22-storey building.
NEMA DG Mrs Zubaida Umar approved the move to enhance coordination and rescue/recovery. Led by Director of Search and Rescue Air Commodore Usman Bature, the team arrived Wednesday night, held ops meetings, and assessed the Dec. 24 blaze site on Martins Street.
The fire, fueled by textiles in warehouses/offices, has raged for days. NEMA Lagos Head Mr Mohammed Olatunde reported six bodies recovered, 13 injured treated and discharged.
Bature reaffirmed commitment to partner with LASEMA, fire services, and security for safe operations. Priority: Expedite rescues while protecting responders and public.
NEMA aims to reinforce its Lagos office active since outbreak. Umar assured public support for affected persons; updates pending.
